Questions people ask us.

If yours isn’t here, email [email protected].

I forgot my passphrase.

On the unlock screen, choose “Forgot your passphrase?” and enter your recovery key, the 8 groups of 4 characters you wrote down when you set up Matemasie. Then pick a new passphrase.

Without the passphrase or the key, your sensitive notes and your vault can’t be opened again. We keep no copy and can’t reset anything, which is exactly why nobody else can read them.

How do I add a device?

Install Matemasie on the new device, open Settings, then “Sync and devices”, and choose the same storage as your other devices, or local network pairing. Enter your passphrase.

A device that’s already in the vault then has to accept the new one: the same code shows up on both screens, so check that they match before you accept. The free plan syncs two devices; for more, you’ll need Plus.

How do I remove a device?

From one of your other devices, open Settings, “Sync and devices”, pick the device and choose “Remove”. The vault keys change right away, so the removed device can’t read anything written after that.

Leave “Erase the data on the removed device” checked: it will wipe its notes and keys the next time it connects.

My phone was lost or stolen.

Remove it from another device right away, as described above. If it reconnects, it wipes its data.

If it stays offline, it still asks for your passphrase, the fingerprint stops being enough after 14 days without syncing, and its data is erased after 10 failed unlock attempts (on by default on Android). To be safe, also change the most important passwords in your vault.

How do I bring over my Sticky Notes?

On Windows, open the Matemasie menu and choose “Import from Sticky Notes...”. Matemasie reads a copy of the Sticky Notes database: your notes come over with their colors, and the original isn’t touched. You can keep Sticky Notes or uninstall it whenever you like.

How do I import my Bitwarden vault?

In Bitwarden, export your vault as JSON, with or without a password. In Matemasie, choose “Import from Bitwarden...”, then the file.

An export without a password holds your passwords in plain text, so delete it as soon as the import is done.

Where is my data?

On your devices, in an encrypted database. If you turned on sync or cloud backup, also in your storage: a Matemasie folder in your Google Drive, the app’s folder in your OneDrive, or the folder you chose on your WebDAV server. Automatic backups go in Matemasie/Backups.

All of these files are encrypted, so opening them without Matemasie shows nothing readable. We don’t have a copy of any of it.

Free or Plus: what’s the difference?

The free plan includes notes, sensitive notes and the vault with no limit on how many, imports, local backups and export, sync between two devices, 30 days of history and attachments up to 10 MB.

Plus adds unlimited devices, one-time codes (TOTP) in the vault, attachments up to 50 MB, a year of history, automatic cloud backup, remote desktop and SSH connections, and password checks against known breaches. Monthly or yearly subscription, or a lifetime license; prices announced at launch.

If I stop Plus, do I lose anything?

No. Nothing is deleted or locked: your attachments and your history stay where they are. Only what you add next follows the limits of the free plan.

If you have more than two devices, you pick the two that keep syncing. The others keep their notes and just pause their sync.

How do I delete everything?

Uninstall Matemasie from each device, delete the Matemasie folder from your cloud storage along with your backups and exports, then remove Matemasie’s access in the security settings of your Google or Microsoft account.

Since we don’t hold any of your data, there’s nothing to delete on our side. The details are in the privacy policy.
